Option 1: Damajagua + Playa Dorada

The classic plan. Morning canyoning, lunch included, then 1.5 hours on a beach lounger in Playa Dorada. Perfect mix of adventure and relaxation.

Option 2: Damajagua + Cofresi Beach

For cruisers from Amber Cove, Cofresi Beach is just 10 minutes from the port. Post-canyon, drink a Dominican rum on the sand and return to the ship in plenty of time.

Option 3: Cable car + Victorian old town

If Damajagua is too strenuous, do the Teleferico cable car, lunch in the Victorian old town, and a rum distillery tour. Less active, more cultural.

Booking tips

  • Pick licensed operators with a "back by" guarantee
  • Ask for the 7 waterfalls route, not the full 27, to save time
  • Confirm pickup at the actual pier, not the port parking
  • Have cash on hand for guide tips ($5-10) and lunch drinks
  • Wear water shoes, not sandals. Most shore excursions do not include footwear

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Damajagua is the most popular Puerto Plata shore excursion. Most operators can pick up at Amber Cove or Taino Bay and get you back 1 to 2 hours before last boarding. Book with a licensed operator that offers a return guarantee.

The cruise line guarantees the ship will wait if its excursion runs late. Independent tours are cheaper (30-50 percent less) and often better quality, but you bear the risk if you miss last boarding. For Damajagua, the drive is only 40 minutes so the risk is very low.

Book the earliest possible pickup, typically 30-60 minutes after your ship docks. You want to be in the canyon before other cruise groups arrive. Aim to be back in port by 2:00 PM to allow time for shopping and a resort day pass.
